New Music: MIHI NIHIL – I Eat You

Los Angeles quartet MIHI NIHIL say they’re three self-taught alternative musicians and an NYC opera classical singer; Adam Alt (on drums), Nick Steinberg (on bass), Benjamin Montoya (on guitar), and Mihi Vox (on vocals). An intriguing combination, as you can tell from the video for I Eat You.

Framing their sound around MTV’s 120 Minutes reruns among other influences they say, the song is not an attempt to hit the blander reaches of the mainstream. Instead, it channels the best of lo-fi, scratchy punk and hardcore, and a splash of post-punk, at times sounding like it’s about to lose shape and career off into a wall of bleached-out noise. It holds together, though, allowing each element of the track to breathe, sounding like a live performance in all its manic, gory glory.
