New Music: Sky Kistler – better off again

When it comes to better off again, Sky Kistler doesn’t hide the track’s high-octane influences. If anything, it embraces them wholeheartedly.

This New York disco musician, DJ, and pop diva in the making gleefully punches every button to 11 as Kistler – also known as ZSHELL – pinpoints the dissonant candyfloss and subversive faux-naiveite that makes the PC Music back catalogue so addictive and groundbreaking.  

Kistler shows us that the genre still has something new to say, even as better off again finds suitably acerbic dayglo companions in the early releases of SOPHIE, Icona Pop, and Charli XCX. The lyrics may talk of having no more fucks to give, but there’s a lot of evidence to the contrary: the savage/coy mashup of the vocals being the perfect vehicle for lyrics that would render any errant fool into a semi-congealed mess.
