New Music: Rosk – Elvis Grant Me Serenity

Mexican artist Rosan Sashida is Rosk, a project whose music draws from art rock and an eclectic, unconventional approach to pop music.

Elvis Grant Me Serenity is an acute and observational examination of celebrity and belief. In an age where political leaders are viewed by some as the direct messengers of deities, Rosk places Elvis Presley in the position of a spiritual figure blessed with varied and idiosyncratic powers.

That is allied with the use of a title as a mantra or slogan, an appeal for calm and yes, serenity on the personal and wider level. Picking such a well-known figure and projecting onto him unlimited and ill-defined powers, Rosk gets us to reflect on our own thoughts, beliefs, and wishes.

The song also comes from a place in her life, says Rosk; “When I was 14, I used to imagine Elvis Presley showing up and saving me from sadness, boredom, and feeling completely out of place.”

The track, which will appeal to fans of PJ Harvey, Anne Clark, and Anna Calvi, is the first single from Rosk’s upcoming Spark by Spark LP, a concept-based album she has revealed focuses on moving from escapism, idolisation, and self-destruction toward presence and emotional responsibility.
