New Music: Silver Liz – Dream More Vivid

Silver Liz – wife-and-husband duo Carrie and Matt Wagner – are mainstays in Brooklyn’s music scene, something sure to gain wider resonance with upcoming album, III.

Dream More Vivid is the first track to be aired from the LP, and what a doozy it is! There’s a vibrant take on shoegaze that is muscular but not out of keeping with the genre, even as the boomy, pacey percussion amps up the track’s sense of dynamism.

With vocals that, to riff on the song title, come across like a vivid dream, ethereal but very present and passionate, it shows that the duo’s incorporation of unexpected sounds and beats continues to add ever more delights to their music.

“Dream More Vivid is one of the rare songs we’ve written that originated from a jam in our apartment,” says Carrie Wagner. “Most of the time I will just send Matt iPhone voice memo demos of songs even though we are in the same apartment.”

“But when he added those guitar chords to the opening synth line I came up with, we just knew we had something. We also performed this one live for a long time before recording it, and testing it on audiences helped us refine the song.”

“Thematically, the song follows a character we all know: the hot mess at a high school reunion who is coping with crushed dreams and bad decisions by tearing others down to lift themselves up.”

Adds Matt, “On this track, and throughout the album in general, I wanted the production to constantly flow through disparate spaces and sounds. We really embraced a maximalist approach. It is hard to know when to stop adding ideas. Whenever Carrie says there is too much going on, I trust it is time to stop.”
