New Music: Teenage Tom Petties – Hotmail

The power-pop naivety of Hotmail is just one thing to love about the latest track from Teenage Tom Petties.

Hotmail is the first single from the upcoming Teenage Tom Petties album, Rally The Tropes – their fourth LP to date – and looks to the 70s and 80s for a lot of its inspiration.

The track has the rama-lama riffs of The Ramones and the hopeless-in-love lyrics of early Buzzcocks, which is not too surprising, as Teenage Tom Petties are a transatlantic outfit, with members in the UK and America.

The quintet gives Hotmail a slacker lo-fi anti-shine, fuzzy and fast, and while it may feature a few rock tropes along the way, that gives it added charm. Clear some space in your bedroom and get rocking!

Tom Brown of the band says about the album, “It still feels like a minor miracle this happened. When the five of us are together, it’s just so fun and pure. I really wanted some songs that would allow us to capture that excitement of when we’re in a room or on stage together, just going at it…not worried about perfection, just playing with joy.”

He continues, “A lot of the songs are celebrating DIY indie rock. Hotmail isn’t, though. That one’s about finding your old email address and reading the messages in horror.”
