New Music: The Sweet Kill – Undead
Undead sees Pete Mills’ solo project The Sweet Kill draw together the two dominant strands of post-punk into a fluid and intriguingly romantic sound that is brooding and upbeat. His rich velvety tones make for a wonderfully enigmatic match for an arrangement that is reminiscent of the dark seduction of Sisters of Mercy, matched with the daylight walking anthems of Editors and Killers.
Says Mills about the lyrics, “Undead illustrates the struggle of an immortal in love with his mortal girlfriend who’s sick. He has no choice but to save her by turning her into his kind. The sonic cinematic soundscapes of 80’s cold wave synths, post-punk instrumentation mixed with, and a full string section walks the listener into gothic cinematic movie.”
He continues, “I love the fear of the unknown and fantasy of magic and when these elements mix, transcendence into the fourth dimension of the spirit world occurs. Undead provides an escape into the realm of one’s own infinite imagination.”
Undead will appear on The Sweet Kill’s Nowhere album which is set for release in early 2024. It’s the follow-up to their Darkness album which you can pick up on vinyl on Bandcamp. You can also hear the band’s music on Spotify and Apple Music – check them out on Facebook or Instagram for further streaming options.
