New Music: ELKIN – Win Win

The members of Irish duo ELKIN jokingly point out that they are not sisters. However, Ellen O’Mahony and Carla Ryan certainly have an intuitive understanding of each other, if new track Win Win is anything to go by.

Pop music but with a dark heart, a bruising approach to the arrangement, with its pounding beats and crunching synths and samples, is the perfect setting for the emotional intensity of the vocals and lyrics. Win Win might cover some challenging emotional terrain, that’s got to be said, and it can be hard going. Still, the confident and emotionally literate vocal performances keep the inherent humanity of the song front and centre.

Here’s what the two had to say about Win Win: “We’ve both had our fair share of break-ups, be it romantic relationships or break down of a friendship. They never seem to get easier, and sometimes you have to convince yourself that breaking up is the best for both of you, even though you know you’re putting yourself first. The lyrics of Win Win are super vulnerable – we wanted to mix that honesty with the fierceness we’ve achieved in our other songs.”
