New Music: Baybs – Would You Dare
With his debut EP due out this June on California’s Text Me Records, San Francisco based musician Craig Jacobs – aka Baybs – has dropped a sweet piece of West Coast rock in the form of Would You Dare. You can listen to the track below.
Finding energy and comfort in combating anxiety via music, Jacobs has passed some of that healing onto the listener here. There are some very open, confessional aspects to the lyrics, which feel a good fit for the 60s-inflected, sunny rock arrangement.
In the past, he’s been compared to The Magnetic Fields and Stephin Merritt, but here there’s a hint of Baxter Dury in the song’s leftfield indie-pop sound, and a very Serge Gainsbourg meets Leonard ambience courtesy of the backing vocals from Zelma Stone and Melissa Russ.
Jacobs says about the creative process behind his music, “There were periods of my life where I didn’t want to leave my house… soon I couldn’t leave my room… then I didn’t even feel safe in my own body. The times I felt like literally jumping out of my skin the only thing that helped was picking up a guitar and creating a melody.”
Would You Dare is out now and can also be streamed on Bandcamp and Spotify. Why not throw Baybs a follow over on Facebook and Instagram to catch up Baybs and his music, including his upcoming Introvertigo EP, which is out on the 11th of June?
