New Music: Imogen Clark – Forget About London

Australians can be quite straightforward at times, and you can certainly say that for Imogen Clark’s Forget About London. It’s the lead single from her forthcoming EP, the uncompromisingly titled Bastards.

Clark has a distinct and fascinating voice, slivers of smoky emotion breaking through the soft, easy-going surface. Like Chrissie Hynde or Sharleen Spiteri, Clark takes an understated yet highly effective approach to the lyrics, allowing their meaning and sense of to shine through, accompanied by an arrangement that hints at 80s rock (that sax solo!) but has a decidedly modern indie-pop sound. Is heartache meant to sound so pleasing to the ear? When it sounds as good Forget About London, I’m not sure that matters.

“In the middle of last year, I went through a really tough breakup and was stranded in London for the aftermath,” recalls Imogen. “I got swept up by this guy, I was on the rebound and found myself falling for him, but in the end, he led me on and left me heartbroken.”
