New Music: Liesl – Fish Net

Fish Net is the second single from 20-year-old Berlin-based artist Liesl’s upcoming debut EP Unfamiliar. She says her interest in music was sparked by relocating from South Africa to Germany as a teenager. Experience has brought a maturity to her music if Fish Net is anything to go by.

Melodrama meets melancholy on Fish Net, as Liesl turns the lyrics in on themselves and her emotions are left on display, sounding bleak at times. There’s a Gothic air to the song, not the music genre, but the literary style, courtesy of Liesl’s vocal performance and the sombre aesthetic of the track. In the lyrics and arrangement, Lisel explores the idea that within us lies some of the greatest dreads of all – our true self and how it finds itself relating to the world outside.

Liesl says about the song, and specifically the lyrics, “Captives of our own desires and our own design, Fish Net navigates through the emotional currents of this earthly existence.”

Fish Net is out now, and Unfamiliar is due for release via German label SUTA. Head over to Liesl’s socials, including Instagram and Facebook, for news on the single and EP, while you can hear more of their music on YouTube Music, Spotify, and Apple Music.
