New Music: Avfall – Siren Teeth

We were rather smitten by Avfall’s July single The Eternal, and October finds them taking a different tack musically on Siren Teeth.

It’s easy to hear why the band was chosen to support Martial Canterel last month; even where Avfall are avowedly focused on post-punk with Siren Teeth. Compared to The Eternal’s inward focus and rolling, steady melody, Siren Teeth is quite frantic by comparison. The guitar melody is relentless, driven forward as if duelling with a concurrent stark synth, messaging a Morse code of warning to the unwary.

Sitting within that storm, the vocals are a comparative respite, but that is a deceptive sleight of hand. The song is actually a “gothic horror novel about the irresistible light in darkness,” the band has revealed. And as in the best horror movies and novels, you might already be familiar with the tale – however when it’s told well, as here, you won’t be able to resist its siren call, no matter how many sharp teeth glisten at you in the night.

Siren Teeth is out now on Novoton and can be heard on major music platforms, including Bandcamp and Spotify. Connect with Avfall on their Instagram or Facebook accounts for the latest music and gig news from the Stockholm band.
