New Music: Misty Mtn – Beachwood

Misty Mtn (vocalist/songwriter Mo Trunzo and multi-instrumentalist Lucas Segal) dropped their sophomore EP Weren’t Those The Days last week. A sublime work of four parts, a particular highlight is the autumnal tones of Beachwood.

An intensely reflective song, it feels equally home next to the current sound of Taylor Swift as it does the musical highpoints of Beach House. Highly personal, at times painfully open lyrics are delivered by Mo Trunzo in a clear yet organic style that brings each word, each fleeting emotion to life, as they wrap themselves around the chilled folk ambience of the arrangement.

The duo describes Beachwood as being the emotional centre of the EP: “The title comes from a specific gas station on Beachwood Dr we used to pass regularly,” says Mo from the band. “It talks about seeing an ex, and imagining the ‘movie version’ of confronting them. It builds and builds into this swirling chaotic place like a movie montage or dream sequence.”
