New Music: esmerelda – Too Much
With the release of her concept EP Medusa Was Innocent fast approaching, London-based alt-pop artist esmerelda has dropped the moody pop perfection of Too Much. The track was produced by BROOKFIELD (Charli XCX, Anne Marie).
Following in the wake of her Jenny and I’m Not A Princess I’m A God singles, Too Much is a carefully crafted nugget of pop gold. A brooding ballad, the song showcases not only esmerelda’s smoky vocals but also her ear for a slow-burning pop hook.
As the vocals grow in confidence within the story of the song, so does the arrangement, as the percussion and synths are consistently and sympathetically in sync with the mood and movement of the lyrics.
Says esmerelda about the single “Too Much is about panicking that life should be coming together quicker. It’s about comparing yourself to your friends, to your past self, to people on social media, and thinking… What am I doing wrong? Why do I feel like I’m not having as much fun or finding as much success as everyone else?
There’s a lot of pressure to be successful and not to disappoint anybody. Perhaps to compensate I can be over-confident and loud at times. I’ve realised that this might come across as overwhelming or, literally ‘too much.’ This song is kind of an ode to all the times I’ve left a scenario second-guessing myself or feeling like I should’ve toned it down.”
