New Music: Lyves – Change

After a two-year break, Lyves has certainly made quite an impact on their return. The stylish How Would It Feel has been followed up by the heart-wrenching honesty of Change. The accompanying video is one of the first to feature the artist.

Lyves’ vocals traverse genres, though blues, gospel, and soul are very much to the fore in terms of tone and phrasing on Change. The song has whispers of classic 70s soul for sure. However, the rich and deep tones Lyves’ performance brings to the song, along with the honesty of the lyrics and the smooth synths bubbling through the arrangement, set the song very much in the here and now. It’s beautiful and heart-breaking in equal measure.

Speaking about the lyrics on Change Lyves discloses, “It is a very personal narrative of my experience reaching rock bottom following the ending of an important relationship. The devastation I felt was like no other I had experienced before, but in completely losing myself, I also found that staying stuck in denial only perpetuated the suffering further.”

She adds, “It’s a song about reaching acceptance after months of living in false hope of reconciliation. It tells the story of how learning to accept and embrace change after so much resistance became my saving grace”.
