New Music: Mother Tongues – A Heart Beating

A Heart Beating sees Toronto’s Mother Tongues make a real splash, along with the announcement of their debut album Love In A Vicious Way. The duo – Lukas Cheung and Charise Aragoza – give shoegaze and dreampop a sharper, almost neon-bright makeover that dazzles as it invites the listener to daydream a while.

Says Cheung about Love In A Vicious Way, “We’re peering into the future and imagining what this world could be. It’s a little William Gibson, a little cyberpunk, it’s lit like a Wong-Kar-Wai film. It’s queer, it’s free, a little goth, everyone’s wearing eyeliner. I like to imagine our record bleeding out of the headphones of some 16-year-old in this not-so-distant universe.”

A Heart Beating can be streamed on Spotify and Apple Music or downloaded on Bandcamp. Love In A Vicious Way is released on the 21st of July via Wavy Haze, the record label of Canadian indie-rock outfit Born Ruffians. You can get to know Mother Tongues better on Instagram and TikTok.
