New Music: Chloe Echo – The Door

Published On: January 19th, 2024|

Chloe Echo is the brainchild of Chloe O’Brien, a New Zealand singer, songwriter, and producer now based in Los Angeles. The Door sees her build on her burgeoning reputation for creating idiosyncratic indie music with a distinctly pop sensibility. It’s hard to resist a song that namechecks Chet Baker!

The first thing that came to mind on hearing The Door was the way it occupies a similar musical space to the likes of Beck and Goldfrapp. It revels in the past, gritty and glamourous in equal measure. It’s very different in style and sound from the majority of chart-friendly music, but it has enough warmth, wit, and hooks to make it memorable – and most of all, a joy to listen to. If you’ve ever had a wild roommate, this one is for you!

The Door is inspired by some real-life experiences, says O’Brien. “This song tells the story of my most iconic and chaotic roommate. I was in college, and moved in with a musical theatre actor who was method acting the part of Emcee in Cabaret. He was fun, eccentric, super into jazz, and completely out of control. I had a lot of fun making this one, I think you’ll have a lot of fun listening.”

The Door is the follow-up to 2023’s Past Life EP and can be streamed on Apple Music, YouTube, and Spotify. For details of other streaming services and hear more about Chloe Echo and maybe her memorable roommate, head over to Instagram and TikTok.
