New Music: Public Health – Pain Girl

Philadelphia’s Alex Moxam has been making music with friends as Public Health for around a decade now. Pain Girl shows the music of this underground indie outfit deserves a wider hearing.

Wearing its 90s and 00s influence on its sleeve, Pain Girl – the title track of their latest EP – is a wonderfully fluid mix of the melodic and the dissonant. The delightfully weather-beaten vocals spar playfully with a slacker rock arrangement that shares more than a little musical DNA with the music of Bill Callahan or Silver Jews.

The three tracks that comprise the Pain Girl EP are an intriguing proposition sonically, and a fitting introduction to a band that’s hard to track down outside steaming services like Apple Music and Spotify.
