New Music: Margot & the Midnight Tenants – Tiny Soldiers

Tiny Soldiers by Brooklyn, New York based indie outfit Margot & the Midnight Tenants has all the hallmarks of a fairy story, but is actually based on a real-life event.

Centred on a little boy and girl at a time they were alone, it reflects on when what felt like a major event hit them. That alone means it has a magical quality to it. There’s an eye for detail in the lyrics, as facts flow into memories, storms and toy soldiers evoking some of the wide-eyed innocence and imagination of childhood.  

The band has a rather sophisticated take on indie music, with harmonies that wouldn’t be out of place on a Fleetwood Mac slow burner, but that’s allied with a tautness in the arrangement that often offers a feeling of suspense that is soon upended by the dreamy vocal style of Margot Bennett.

States Bennett about Tiny Soldiers, “I wrote this song based on a story my mother used to tell me about being home alone with her brother as children and seeing a lightning bolt hit the street right outside of their home.”
