New Music: Sonic Anonymous – Be Good Tonight

The late-night electronic club/pop of Be Good Tonight can be viewed as a memorial to a lost loved one, but it’s not staid or sombre.

Coming from a similar tonal template to the likes of Hot Chip, Tame Impala, and thanks to its rainy ambience, The Blue Nile. It plays around with traditional pop narratives, in part due to the deadpan falsetto of vocal delivery, but also the decidedly serious nature of the lyrics.

Written about the artist’s late brother, a military veteran who ended up homeless in Las Vegas and tragically passed away from an overdose, it is full of love but also pleading. The title of the song becomes an ever more prominent feature as it becomes obvious that it comes from just wanting the best for someone who is suffering.

Sonic Anonymous lightens the mood, though: crisp arpeggios and raw guitar mix in with the sweeten pain of the vocals, filling the track with bittersweet memories and a happy/sad vibe. Your heart may break a little bit, but the song will also help put it back together.
