New Music: Dark Tropics – Whispers

Northern Soul, but possessed of a 60s-style garage/rock aesthetic, the noir-pop of Whispers is the real deal when you’re looking for something relentless and organic to get your day – or night – started.

In fact, if you’re ever going to make a montage of your day or night, this would be a great soundtrack.

Pump-up kicks, bluesy licks, and a no-filters vocal – courtesy of Rio McGuinness, who cites Aretha Franklin and The Velvet Underground as influences – give no quarter as they successfully strive to give the listener a good time.

It honestly feels like Rio lived the lyrics; the joy and pain come across as so genuine, and the arrangement – conjured up with fellow Dark Topics member Gerard Sands – sounds so authentic that you wonder if you should be afraid of Dark Tropics or fear whoever they sold their souls to, to make music this primal and perfect.

Talking about the song, Dark Tropics disclosed, “Whispers is about throwing caution to the wind in pursuit of the greatest nights of your life.”
