New Music: Dlina Volny – Vochy

Vochy is a highly significant track for Dlina Volny, being the band’s first release in their native Belarusian.

It’s also their first since the In Between album from August last year, and builds on the sound they laid out on that stellar LP. Originally from Minsk but now based in London and Warsaw, the trio – Ales Shishlo, Masha Zinevitch, and Vad Mikutski – find an electronic pop seam within dark wave that shifts the genre to something lighter and human.

Zinevitch is siren-like, her vocals drawing you ever closer to the fire and sadness that gives Vochy its burning essence. You don’t need to understand Belarusian to intuit that the band are communicating hope and fear here, hitting back against the oppressive strains around us, not just of life, but additionally within dark wave itself. I’d file this, and In Between, alongside Boy Harsher and She Past Away; Dlina Volny are a band with something to say, and their own vibrant and emotionally charged way of saying it.

“Vochy is a manifesto against lies and abuse of power,” they state. “It’s a diary entry about internal struggle, the inability to tolerate the abuse of power, and an attempt to make sense of yourself within an endless stream of information and lies.”
