New Music: Sleuth Gang – Safe Bet

A livewire video with a dry sense of humour isn’t the only thing you need to watch when it comes to Leeds seven-piece Sleuth Gang.

They really do come across like a gang, as each individual performance on Safe Bet dovetails neatly into a song that barrels through punk, rap, and funk, with a real highlight being the hoarse intensity of the chorus.

If you’ve ever wanted to see what it’s like to have a mosh pit all of your own, Safe Bet is great for that experiment, as it marries the fire of Gallows and IDLES to the emotionally literate and occasionally heartbreaking lyrical stylings of The Streets.

As fun as it may be to throw some wild shapes to, Safe Bet covers some of the band’s life experiences in an unsentimental and stark manner, pushings concepts to the fore that some might find challenging. However, don’t let that stop you from listening to and enjoying this banger.

“The song captures the painful reality of bending and reshaping yourself just to feel accepted & so becoming whoever the other person wants you to be, in a futile attempt to hold onto something that’s already broken,” says one of the band’s three vocalists, Lewis Jones.

“The idea of me being seen as easy prey, or a ‘Safe Bet’ by the offending party leaves me vulnerable to their abusive behaviour, and I end up giving away my power… not good!”
