New Music: Washing Machina – Debbie Lost Her Mind

As the video for Debbie Lost Her Mind evokes comparisons to Lars von Trier’s The Idiots, the song itself brings back a similarly golden age in indie music.

Stockholm’s Washing Machina find a groove on Debbie Lost Her Mind that has similarities to the likes of Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth and – to a certain extent – The Wannadies in the way it creates an alternative rock attitude that doesn’t shy away from seeking a wider audience.

Melodic and fuzzy, with a slacker veneer that belies the intricate and ever-changing moods of the arrangement, the lyrics look at something that initially seems like a joke between friends but soon transpires to be something darker and more destructive.

Says Washing Machina vocalist and guitarist Karl Nordahl about the song, “Everyone knows a Debbie. She’s the one who pushes the night past its limits, who flips the switch from fun to madness in a heartbeat. This song is about that energy: the thrill, the chaos, and the mess it leaves behind.”
