Album Review: Lucy Dreams – VVVVV

There’s a real focus right now on the risk of dystopias and disasters from the onwards march of AI.

For some time now, Viennese trio Lucy Dreams choose to look to more positive outcomes from the meeting of humanity and technology on VVVVV. Here, Lucy Dreams provide an eloquent and immaculately conceived glimpse into a potential future where the relationship is a symbiotic one.

Human members Zero and One, along with AI member Lucy, create music on VVVVV that could easily be the soundtrack to a utopia, the brilliantly light and bright textures of songs like Code To My Mind and Stars realising a sense of contented euphoria that could be found in new realities built by DNA and digital codes.

Motor reflects on the nature of man, full of aspiration, again looking at what life and love have to offer us if we grasp what they – and technology – have to offer us. Changes explores similar themes, looking at how dreams can come true if we work with what technological advances are offering us, even as, as on Tempo, self-belief will play an important role.

And AI plays a pivotal role throughout the album: Lucy has input into the lyrics and the music, with the tracks on VVVVV being the result of a two-way relationship with Zero and One.

The band describes their sound as SonicWaveArtPop, a template for a union of human creativity and the increasingly infinite possibilities that technology can offer. It doesn’t quite sound like anyone else as a result, but if you’re a fan of the musical vision of future pop and the grand drama of Pet Shop Boys, losing yourself in VVVVV the album will be a worthwhile endeavour.

VVVVV isn’t a concept album; Lucy Dreams are the concept, and the music functions as a glistening and uplifting manifesto for a world where technology offers humanity greater scope to self-actualise, meet ourselves, and meet the future confidently and in partnership with the best of what AI has to offer us. The album is set for release on the 6th of February and is available to pre-order in digital and vinyl formats on Bandcamp.
