New Music: Christian Cohle – Levitate
Levitate marks a creative and sonic departure for Dubliner Christian Cohle, and for me, it’s a very successful one.
Cohle still explores that Bryan Ferry quality to his vocals, at times sensual and at other times suave and sophisticated, but always the centre of the listener’s focus.
The arrangement finds inspiration elsewhere, applying a club beat to a dark wave meets New Wave sound. Cohle himself cites Talking Heads and LCD Soundsystem as having a formative influence on Levitate, but it also has a glazed, nocturnal ambience that has whispered tones of The Blue Nile, or The Associates. And for me, you rarely get better than that.
“In my head, Levitate is a Talking Heads/LCD Soundsystem song,” Cohle discloses. “Groovy bassline, four-to-the-floor forward-moving. It’s unruly and bold. I had a lot of fun recording it. Sometimes when making music, I hit a vein, and something erupts. Levitate was one of those.”
“It’s the first song I’ve released where I’m performing everything heard on the track…drums, bass, synths, and vocals.”
