New Music: Tricky FM – Feather

If you’re not familiar with Tricky FM, her new album and North American live dates are a wonderful way to remedy that.

Feather is in turn a perfect way to define what Tricky FM, the creative alter ego for San Francisco musician Hana Freed, does on her new LP, Twin Star Fantasy. Dreamy and futuristic, and equally resonant of gaming worlds comprising starlit skies and heaven-scraping marble towers, it has that escapist/crunchy mix that will easily draw in fans of current Purity Ring and early 00s Grimes.

Feather has more to say than that – the hushed sung vocals, braided with a spoken-word section that youthful Joni Mitchell would have died for, are paired with lyrics that are earthy in both senses of the word. Freed doesn’t eschew facing reality here, instead meeting it on her own terms as a woman navigating a world that is constantly and rapidly changing.

Twin Star Fantasy is out now via Cherub Dream Records in digital and limited-edition vinyl formats. You can pick those up on Bandcamp, and stream the album on Spotify. For other listening options and details of Tricky FM’s tour, make sure you head to Instagram.
