New Music: Two Dark Birds – Girl of Summer
I’m a sucker for music that leaves light scents of Brel, Bowie, and Reed in its wake, so I was destined to fall for Girl of Summer.
A track from the upcoming Dreamers of the Golden Dream (Vol. 1) album by Two Dark Birds, Girl of Summer is entwined around love, loss, and more than a hint of decadence in its talk of bull pens and dope dens.
Much of that is down to the vocals of Steve Koester, and the way the smallest phrase comes across as having the greatest import and impact. The references to classic tracks of the 70s and 80s in the lyrics add to the feeling that this is a tribute to a past love, one that is being immortalised in a song that is drenched in folk that has been fractured and remade by the rock of the 90s and pop of the 60s.
For updates on Dreamers of the Golden Dream (Vol. 1), which is out on the 27th of this month, be sure to hit up Two Dark Birds on Facebook and Instagram. Girl of Summer is out now and can be heard on SoundCloud and Spotify.
