New Music: Strange Fruit – Monopolar

After a decade-long hiatus, Jakarta’s Strange Fruit have returned with the cosmic dream pop of Monopolar.

Describing Monopolar as dream pop is a bit reductive and probably unfair, I have to admit, as the band expertly and flawlessly interpolates trippy electronica and acid washes into the arrangement, exploring chilled textures even as the track never stops shifting form and function.

The presence of shoegaze motifs in the guitar and vocals are similarly moved from the ethereal to the kosmische, as Strange Fruit let us know that their upcoming releases are going to be an esoteric adventure that’ll resonate with fans of Caribou.

The band is set to release their Drips mini-album via Jakarta-based Gentle Tuesday Recordings on the 26th of March. For news on that, connect with Strange Fruit on their Instagram feed. Drips is available to pre-order on Bandcamp.
