New Music: Washing Machina – The Top

The Top is the third single from Before My Mind Wakes Up, the new album from Washing Machina, and is indie sad-pop at its most sublime.

In common with their previous single Debbie Lost Her Mind, Stockholm-based Washing Machina once again employ a fuzzed-out and contemplative tonal palette in the style of Pavement or Dinosaur Jr with less of the hard-edge influence of Sonic Youth or The Breeders.

Even though I initially saw The Top as a love song, as the lyrics talk about sunshine and blue jeans, the song soon ventures somewhere darker – the band has revealed The Top is about “distrust and disappointment in modern life,” yet is restrained and introspective with it.
