New Music: Two-Man Giant Squid – 3 Hits

There is a lot of humour to 3 Hits, the latest single from the extravagantly named Two-Man Giant Squid. It also has a serious side.

An art-punk banger from the Brooklyn quintet’s A Band In The Post-Modern World EP, 3 Hits is as arch and socially anarchic as Art Brut or VLURE, and as absurdist as Devo in their prime. I could be misreading the nature of the song, but at a certain point, the meaning of the ‘3 hits’ seems to change, adding a wicked gleam that got me giggling like a schoolkid. This is good, possibly not so clean, fun.

“3 Hits tells the story of a band burnt out on getting ahead, asked to open for Wheatus on a boat, and pestered by their agent to deliver 3 hits,” state the band. “It’s our tongue-in-cheek take on what it’s been like to be a band in modern times when streaming has made music an unsustainable career, AI is running rampant, and the world is just a giant hurling ball of shit (listen for the Wheatus rant at 2:45 of the song).”

“In the end, we’re all burnt out on being heard. Stuck in a paradoxical industry where everyone is fighting for a piece of the pie… but that pie is no money. So, here’s our alter ego story – a dirtbag band asked to open for Wheatus on their boat and only obliging for a trade-off of the sacred 3 Hits.”
