New Music: Stanford Lin – Differently

The lead single from his upcoming album HIDE, Stanford Lin has shared the delicious yet dissonant sonic romanticism and regret of Differently.

Accompanied by a video filmed in Paris, after which Paris Syndrome is named, the lyrics similarly look at the nature of disconnection, though here it is framed with the context of previous actions and decisions.

Lin has spoken about how the track is part of a body of work that was nearly “scrapped into oblivion,” and maybe that is what heightens the intensity and intimacy of the track. Its up-tempo melody and downtempo-style production mean it could easily slip into a club set, yet the lyrics are defined by regret, uncertainty, and looking at the past.

The video has similarly complex layers – there is joy in the dancing, no inhibitions, yet Lin is alone, on deserted streets, bridges, and tunnels, surrounded by beauty but not fully connected with it.

“Differently… is exploring fragmented intimacy, nostalgia, and emotional distance… intimate lyrics reflecting on the past and the weight of one’s actions,” says internationalist multi-disciplinary artist Lin, who currently based in Beijing.

Differently is streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, and Deezer. For news on HIDE, which is set for release this August, don’t forget to connect with Stanford Lin on Instagram.
