New Music: Josaleigh Pollett – Bed of Quiet
Salt Lake City musician Josaleigh Pollett brings us along with her on the journey to her If I Let It Quiet album, with the dawn chorus of Bed of Quiet.
It mirrors the birth of a new day in how it opens up in a hushed manner, with vocals and washed synths joined by a delicate lo-fi setup. Nothing within the arrangement dominates, allowing the Pollett’s voice to remain a delicate and intimate presence throughout.
Soon, though, Bed of Quiet grows to almost a cacophony, except that everything has its place; a balance exists within its constantly moving parts. That feels like an apt companion for the words that Pollett brings to life, a seemingly endless list of thoughts and scenarios that appear determined to keep sleep a distant friend.
“Bed of Quiet is an over-thinker’s anthem,” disclosed Pollett about the lyrics. “A song for the sleepless, and the hours spent playing and replaying scenarios on a loop in your brain where there is no right decision, digging for a yes or a no in a mountain of perhaps.”
“We wanted the production to feel like it belonged in the middle of the night, when you’re not quite yet dreaming, but suspended above your body like a projected film of the last few week’s events you can’t stop watching, playing too loud for sleeping.
“When Chris Walla (ex of Death Cab for Cutie) sent us some instrumental recordings from the early 2010s he’d yet to use, they fit perfectly into the fitful, crumpled sheets of the bed we were making. The post-chorus vocal ‘a little doubt’ is also the only time Jordan (Watko aka Crowd Shy, who produced If I Let It Quiet) sings on the record, pitch-shifted all to heaven, of course.”

If I Let It Quiet is set for release on the 24th of July in digital and 45 RPM double vinyl formats via Lavender Vinyl and Audio Antihero. It’s now up for pre-order on Bandcamp, for pre-save options and news of Josaleigh Pollett’s live dates to tie in with the LP, head to TikTok, Facebook, Blue Sky, or Instagram.
