New Music: DETECTS – I’ll Never Try Again

DETECTS’ new album, The Future At First, never puts a foot wrong over its nine tracks, but I’ll Never Try Again is a personal highlight.

The Mississippi-based project helmed by Warren Ard describe the track as a “narrative of remembrance and regret,” and that is fuelled by the 80s energy of the rumbling bass line and the iced angst of the synths. The immediate impression you get is that the song fits into a darkwave aspect, but the mood of the production and the emotional distance of the vocals mean it could easily be viewed as a disruptive and impressively immersive approach to shoegaze from a mainly electronic direction. It’s not fully representative of the depth and scope of the album, but it does give a good insight into what DETECTS succeed in doing within the creativity and catharsis of its sonic and emotional setting.
