New Music: AN_NA – Too Much

Montreal, Québec, duo AN_NA is the stunning result of decades spent immersed in spaces where music and art meet.

Into their fourth decade of making music, the artists behind the AN_NA moniker should not be categorised as being influenced by other artists. As alternative electronic evolved from post-punk to pivot into electronica that gave the world acts from Nitzer Ebb and Front 242 to the modern acts like Minuit Machine, Emmon, and Boy Harsher, AN_NA have been there under various guises.

It means that Too Much isn’t an exploration of the early days of EBM and the outer reaches of dark wave but the work of two people, Anne and Alain, reimagining their roots. Finding new ways to express unforgiving beats and haunting themes, it looks at a classic period in musical and their own histories, viewed through modern technology, productive values, and topics. Here, they take an unflinching look at the questions surrounding violence in the modern age.

It’s a tribute to them as musicians and people that they still innovate and take risks, showing us that there is always something new to say, and new ways to say it. Long may they continue to make music!
