New Music: Hunny Buzz – Wishbone
Hunny Buzz top off a recent tour with indie legends The Hoosiers with the acerbic and sadly still relevant Wishbone.
The band work with a heavygaze and alt-rock space, with the latter coming to the fore in Wishbone in the anthemic fire of the guitar riffs and the smooth, sudden shift in mood within the song from anger to silence.
Vocalist Lyd Read has an emotional clarity and delivery that underpins the narrative of the track, switching tone to reflect back at manipulators how they want her to see herself, and that she can see what they’re doing. It’s easy to imagine others finding the song uncomfortable, even as the track will appeal to fans of Paramore, Pale Waves, and modern-day CHVRCHES.
That discomfort will come from how we’re still having these conversations and women still aren’t being heard. That is why we hear the story of Wishbone over and over.
The song has a deliberate sense of weariness and repetition at times, with the lyrics focusing on how the narrator has dealt with men and situations like this more than once already. The guitars and vocals grow into a howl of rage and independence; she has seen many boys behave like this and the tricks they play. But they’re not just tricks, instead designed to undermine women and rationalise the worst behaviours of men.

“I believe every woman has a story about a man,” states Read. “A story that haunts her, belittles or destroys her. The song holds rawness and an underlying frustration that comes from the exhaustion and doom of dealing with it on a daily basis, and we’ve had enough!”
