New Music: King’s Evil – King’s Evil

Last month saw the release of King’s Evil’s self-titled EP, and that title track is a fragile, worthwhile, lo-fi affair.

You get a great feel for the EP here, as it winds its way through some emotional and sonic byways. Pavement’s way with constructing a song on the edge of a gentle and dignified collapse is present in the arrangement and lyrics.

In fact, the lyrics brief yet complex, a strong centre, before the song dissolves into a friendly and unfocused end. That lack of a neat resolution contrasts with the vocal duet, courtesy of Puppy Problems’ Sami Martasian and JM Dussault of (T-T)b, their complementary and focused spartan/warmth combination unexpectedly melodic and laden with emotion.

They have described the EP as being about community, and communities can be supportive, chaotic, structured, spontaneous, and nurturing in turn, and you can hear a lot of that in the unspoken message of the song – and the EP itself.

You can pick up one of the last few vinyl copies of King’s Evil on Bandcamp via Worry Bead Records.
