New Music: Static Club – Connection

Aberdeen-based Static Club take a deliberate and successful lo-fi approach to Connection, their debut single.

It’s also marking the duo’s return to releasing music after the demise of their previous band. If Connection is a statement of intent, it’s a strong one. Recorded on 4-track cassette tape in their living room, it can easily be viewed as a tribute to the days of the early-80s UK music scene, when genres like post-punk, shoegaze, and indie hadn’t fully diverged to become distinct entities.

The guitar melody of Lewis Gill is distinctive and diffuse, an analogue indie jangle that fades in and out like long-wave radio, heading towards a post-punk lament before pulling back from the edge. Georgia Gibson has a voice that is difficult to define, which aids that uncertainty within the lyrics. A folkish purity married to a gothic-like yearning, she pierces the veil of the production, providing an uncanny stillness within a song that is restless and emotionally raw.

I’m curious to see and hear where Static Club goes next. They’re evidently talented musicians with a strong sound on their first release, and their future could be a promising one. Connection is streaming on Bandcamp and Spotify. Keep in the know with all things Static Club by following them on Instagram.
