New Music: Before After Again – Nonetheless
Arizona-based Before After Again don’t let the heat of The Grand Canyon State intrude on the chilled tones of Nonetheless.
The project of duo Jason Whitcomb and Kevin Hartnell, Before After Again, places the roots of Nonetheless in the fertile ground in post-punk and 80s synthpop. The vocals have a similarity to those of Justin Warfield, tightly coiled as the lyrics unspool their uneasy scenario, easy to relate to on an emotional level all the while. They find welcoming ground on warm and left-field electronic pop sounds, nodding maybe to the late-80s period of Depeche Mode, but also the more recent singles of T.O.Y. and And One, thoughtful and considered. Like those bands, Nonetheless will keep you thinking about those lyrics, well after it has faded from your hearing.
Nonetheless is out now on the fabulously named Overlook Hotel Records. It’s streaming on Spotify and also Bandcamp, where the track and the band’s back catalogue are available for download. Hit up Before After Again on Instagram for band news and more streaming options for their music.
