New Music: bülow – Revolver
Now based in The Netherlands, lockdown and a new location doesn’t seem to have knocked alternative pop singer and songwriter bülow out of her creative stride. When you hear Revolver, you’ll know what I mean.
Exploring her parents’ record collection has led her to revisit the music of Johnny Cash, Kate Bush, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, and The Shins. The lyrics do hark back to country and folk, the female presence being both beguiling and dangerous. The track, though, is blissful indie-pop. A breathless and memorable chorus takes the listener on a wild ride, switching tempo, rhythm, and mood with ease.
You could hear Revolver in your local indie club or on Eurovision, and it would make sense in both settings – and that’s what makes it such a great song.
Talking about the track, bülow discloses, “I want people to feel empowered listening to it. You are as powerful as you want to be. I don’t wake up every day feeling my most confident self. No one does. I struggle with finding my footing and falling into a state of confidence every day where what people say or do doesn’t affect me. It’s something I work on every day, but I know that when I am that and I believe it, I’m not afraid of fucking up/falling on my face. That’s how I want to live. And that’s what I want people to feel when listening to Revolver.”
