New Music: Dubinski – Downtown Operation

Scotland-based siblings Dubinski show their versatility and keen eye for political trends past and present on new single Downtown Operation.

Downtown Operation will also feature on their What Is Your Definition Of Happiness? LP, which is set for release in 2025.

The Gaine brothers are known for upbeat indie-rock bangers, but here they unveil the more introspective and melodic side of their sound. The song is a tribute to their parents, but also a memorial to the struggles they endured in their lives.

Harking back to the fluid, leftfield indie-rock sounds of acts like The Young Knives and XTC, the band successfully seeks to light a political fire in the heart of the listener, reminding me of acts like Easterhouse and Redskins at their most fiery.

Ramping up the emotional intensity with every word, the vocal sample towards the end of the song is emblematic of an unbridled passion that flows through Downtown Operation.

“Our Dad suggested Arthur Scargill for the sample,” says vocalist Eugene Gaine, the youngest of the four Gaine brothers who make up Dubinski.

“He emigrated to London from Limerick, while our mum was born in Bradford to Polish and Ukrainian immigrants. The mistreatment our parents endured in their youth gave them socialist values, and that rubbed off on us.”

What Is Your Definition Of Happiness? comes out on the 7th of March, 2025, in vinyl, CD, and digital formats. You can get all the pre-order and pre-save info you need right here.
