New Music: Dubstar – We’re The Lucky Ones

While 2025 sees Saint Etienne sadly announcing their disbandment in 2026, it also sees good news in the return of their creative peers, Dubstar.

On the face of it, We’re The Lucky Ones is a Christmas song and a love song, but as is the way with Dubstar, there’s always a sense that not everything is as it seems. Sarah Blackwood sings about possibly being happier at Christmas, begging questions on what has preceded the holiday season. There’s talk of being the lucky ones, even as the song seems to undermine the traditional narrative, making you doubt your interpretation of the lyrics.  The arrangement does contain some nods to the season, but with a tension playing through them, skewing the track into uncertain terrain and feelings. It’s very Dubstar, basically, and that’s what makes it such a great piece of music.
