Ellis May has worked as a sound designer and music composer on feature films, an occupation which has surely but positively fed in to the dark cinematic tones on Waterlillies from her new EP, The Distance.

The arrangement rumbles and reverberates its way right in to your soul, creating an ominous sense of longing and possibly regret, but certainly captivating in its epic tones. It’s the vocals that will really grab you though. With hints of Kate Bush, Nico and latter-day Marianne Faithfull it seems to simultaneously encapsulate the sleazy port bars of Europe with the wild moors and tundras of the far north.

Mystical and magical despite its electronic heart, Waterlillies reveals and embraces that primal agency within us all. Waterlillies and The Distance are now streaming on Spotify, you can get more information on Ellis May and her music by checking her out on Facebook.
