New Music: Empty Heaven – I Don’t Understand It

Empty Heaven formed in 2020 in San Antonio, building up a substantial collection of songs since then. I Don’t Understand It is one of them, featuring on the unusual EGGSONG collection.

The track’s brash and jangly dream pop tones might not be representative of the band’s sound or ethos, but frankly, it rocks. Deeply personal, coming across as lo-fi in sound but intricate in terms of the themes and threads within the arrangement, it has a plaintive quality, as the narrator searches to find a way for things to make sense.

Says the artist in the lyrics, “I walk out that door, and still, I hit a wall.”

He adds about the song, “Sometimes, it does not matter how good circumstances are or how many blessings you have. If you are held down by something on the inside, like a weight in your chest, the whole world looks one way: impossible and sad. It can be overcome with time. But when one is in the thick of it, it’s deeply confusing.

“One can be forgiven for only being able to say one sentence,” he concludes, as he continues in the lyrics: “I don’t understand it.”

He adds about the new collection of songs, “EGGSONG is the culmination of 7 years of relatively private creation, released by Friend Club Records.”

“It’s a 4-part project that explores many facets of what I do, from maximalist guitar expression, to very, very intimate solo piano music.”

“It is my hope that each section of EGGSONG not only paints a more vivid picture of my music, but also brings one up to speed. There is much to say, and these 44 songs hopefully say most of it.”
