EP Review: Zacc Lee – Why It’s Fine To Fall In Love On A Friday Night

Zacc Lee isn’t so much a person as a project, sharing ideas that becomes something cohesive, calming, and curative on their upcoming EP.

The title track captures so much of what makes the EP such a rewarding listening experience. Electronic leftfield pop with nods to dream pop and SoundCloud rap, it has echoes of the sound of raindrops as it falls from leaf to leaf in the summer sun.  

An instrumental track, it uses gradual shifts in tone and texture – and occasionally tempo – to reflect changes in mood and movement, as if mirroring how lightness may occasionally bring some darkness with it. That soon lifts, however, like a gesture to the listener to look to the positive, as clouds always have beauty and light within them, even when a storm is possible.  

That observational yet immersive quality is present throughout. While a largely instrumental EP, the vocals on lovesick <3 serve to accentuate the intensity of low-key heartache that drives the song. That also feeds into the two versions of season se7en, both more upbeat in comparison to the EP’s other tracks, hinting at the influence hyperpop and IDM has had on its overall creative energy. 

The EP has the fluidity of The Durutti Column and often the sweet and introspective daydream tones of Galaxie 500, though it must be highlighted that the EP is focused on establishing for itself a distinctive electronic palette, one that soothes the soul and is an ideal soundtrack for moments of quiet self-reflection.
