New Music: Fotoform – This City is Over

This week sees the release of Grief is a Garden (Forever in Bloom), the new album from Seattle’s dark dream pop outfit Fotoform.

Featured track The City is Over is a stunning exemplar of the band’s sound: the warm tones of dream pop are given gritty glamour courtesy of a post-punk aligned rhythm section, as the vocals of Kim House add a dreamily mournful air.

The band openly reference the influence of acts like Pale Saints and Lush on the new album, which helps explain the Anglophone energy of the track, though any sense of English reserve is absent in the way sometimes-difficult personal experiences are willed into becoming beautiful shades and sounds here.

They say of the song, “We live so much of our lives numbed and drained by the daily grind, serving up our time and energy – our existence – to sustain ourselves.”

“It’s so easy to get stuck on autopilot, overwhelmed and too depleted to check in and (re)discover who we are and what we really want. “

“This City is Over is a call to wake up from our sleepwalking and challenge ourselves to start living our truths, to listen to the voice within: Follow the truth inside your soul.”

Fotoform are Kim House on vocals, bass, synths, and guitar, Geoffrey Cox on guitars; with Michael Schorr (ex-Death Cab for Cutie) on drums.

Grief is a Garden (Forever in Bloom) comes out on the 18th of April and can be pre-ordered on Bandcamp, with US and EU live dates to follow its release. For all the latest news, follow Fotoform on Facebook and Instagram.
