New Music: Las Nubes – Would Be

Though it’s been sadly confirmed that there will not be a live-action take on Power Puff Girls, something good has come from the idea. Would Be by Las Nubes is a juggernaut track that would have been perfect for its soundtrack.

The song, which will also feature on the band’s Tormentas Malsanas album, has a strong 90s influence, slotting nicely alongside the likes of Pixies, Hole, and Lush. The personal lyrics are paired with a guitar-led arrangement that veers from grunge to punk and back, though the smooth flow of the song feels inspired by dreampop. Melodic and moody, Would Be is a dark gem of the rarest kind.

Says Las Nubes’ Ale Campos, “There was a rumor going around about a live-action Power Puff Girls series being made by Diablo Cody. It was going to be set in the future and have them portrayed as adults looking back on their lives as crime-fighting little girls who missed out on being kids.”

“I grew up in the ‘90s and PPG was one of my favorite cartoons, so I was really excited about this. One day Emile and I were talking about how cool it would be to write the theme song for the show, so Would Be was the result of that.”

The video for the song carries a special meaning for Campos, as like the song, it reflects on aspects of her younger years. “…I edited an old home movie of my father in his late 40s doing tricks with a soccer ball. Growing up in Argentina, he always dreamed of going pro. Soccer was his first love and he finally had his chance and played professionally for a year before getting seriously injured.”

“He wasn’t able to continue his career in soccer after that, but he always carried the love for the sport in his heart. I felt like the video captured the essence of the song, which is the desire to take back those years you lost and just cherish them.”

Would Be can be downloaded via Bandcamp, and the sugar, spice, and everything nice long player Tormentas Malsanas is set for release on the 14th of June.

The band has an official launch party at Will’s Pub in Orlando, Florida on the same date. For album news and streaming options for the music of Las Nubes, hit up their Facebook and Instagram channels.
