New Music: Letting Up Despite Great Faults – She Spins

With their fourth album due out in March, the wonderfully named Letting Up Despite Great Faults took our breath away when we heard the gossamer guitar sounds of She Spins.

The Austin, Texas outfit weave a rich web of classic guitar genres into the sublime whole that is She Spins. The song, which sees vocalist and guitarist Mike Lee question the insecurity felt in a relationship, has an Anglocentric air at times, with The Smiths and early Primal Scream bringing an almost whimsical air to the track.

But there’s an increasingly muscular edge to the song, a zesty pop edge flowers in the chorus, while the arrangement heads back more to the band’s southern roots, with hints of vintage REM at their most elegiac increasingly apparent. She Spins takes from the past, but isn’t beholden to it, its vibrancy placing it very much in the here and now.
