New Music: Memoryy – Memory From A Dream

The first insight into the upcoming Exit Interview album, Memory From A Dream is Memoryy at his most inventive and human.

Memoryy is musician, songwriter, and producer Shaun Hettinger, and on Memory From A Dream he entwines the personal and professional sides of his life to dramatic and delightful effect.

As a musician, Hettinger has often ploughed an underground and outsider aesthetic, be it as a solo artist or a band member in his local New Mexico music scene. His day job, by contrast, finds his work featuring in films and adverts, setting or selling a scene – he recently worked on Fortnite x Star Wars!

Within Memory From A Dream, both can be heard; the chorus is catchy even as you find yourself teetering on skirting around a sense of wistfulness that you don’t expect in a track that is nominally a synthpop song. Despite its chorus and hooks, it approaches pop from an experimental viewpoint, making me think of Magdalena Bay and Purity Ring in how it shifts a pop narrative somewhere exciting and refreshing – even as it is more likely to appeal to fans of Kite, Washed Out, and Sombr.
