New Music: Mothica – Now

Mothica is the audio/visual project of Oklahoma born McKenzie Ellis, who says she worked on music as a side-project/cathartic release from her rigid school assignments. Though born from tough times, tracks such as NOW have a stark beauty to them.

A slow-burning alt.pop grower of a song, NOW is drenched in honestly expressed emotion and deeply emotive imagery as its restrained opening acts as a perfect showcase for her soulful vocals and heartfelt lyrics. The intimate tones to the arrangement make for a sympathetic companion to the message of the song, stirring in tone yet open and engaging, offering the listener both comfort and a message of survival.

Mothica has this to say about the track:  “NOW is a good introduction to my next era, because it started as a freestyle in the recording studio, so I didn’t think too hard about it. I didn’t write out lyrics beforehand, I just pulled from my subconscious and leftover phrases from the graveyard of past demos. ‘It’s not my fault, it’s my fight’ embodies what message I wanted to get across with my music. I was born with mental illness and I choose to battle it every day. For the first time, I felt compelled to write a full-length project about my struggles and try to better myself in the process.”

Mothica’s NOW is out now and can be streamed or downloaded on all major platforms including Spotify. You can also check out her back catalogue there and on Bandcamp, or head over to Facebook, Instagram or Twitter to keep up on news about new music and upcoming live dates in Los Angeles, Brooklyn, and Toronto.
