New Music: Nuala Honan – I’m Alright

Bristol-based, Australia-born musician Nuala Honan‘s 2020 album Doubt & Reckoning made quite an impression, including being BBC 6Music’s Album of the Day. Her sound has added more colours to its musical palette since the LP, as you can hear on I’m Alright.

The song’s Lana Del Rey meets Roy Orbison mix of pop, nostalgia, and searing emotional intensity are delivered in an arrangement that could be right from the Grand Ole Opry. The vocals and lyrics are pure indie though, more about standing by yourself than your man, no matter how hard things may seem.

Says Honan about the track, “I haven’t been intentionally writing ‘Covid songs,’ but as a confessional songwriter I try to make sense of what is going on in the world and my place in it, so I think it’s only natural I’ve been drawn to something soothing. I wanted to make a companion. A song you can take into your world and put it on repeat – when you’re cleaning the house, when you’re walking around your neighbourhood, when you’re having a cup of tea with your friend.”

She adds, “The ending of the song, this repetitive mantra, ‘I’m alright’, and the wavy melody, is for the listener to pause, to dream, and go where you need to go, to accept where you’re at, and that is enough, and you are alright, and have the courage to create a vision of where you want to go, and what is the next right thing to do.”
